S1E4: ANATOMY CONTENTS

MISSION OBJECTIVES

  • At the end of this pinball tournament all pinheads will be able to define, identify and explain different parts of wave anatomy in both transverse and longitudinal waves.

  • After completing wizard mode (research it), all pinheads and plungeroos will demonstrate what they’ve learned about wave properties by making transverse waves and calculating average frequency and period.

BASIC THEORY

  • Waves, just like robots, and people, and holo betta fish have anatomy. A couple parts that are frequently confused are amplitude, which is: The maximum distance the medium is displaced from its rest position; and wavelength (not to be confused with cycle), which is: The straight line distance between sucessive crests in a wave. Check out the rest in the lesson.

  • Frequency is a COUNT of how often something happens in time. Like, the number of wave crests that pass by a point in one second. Or, how many laps the Bot-Mobile can go around the track in ten minutes. Period is the TIME it takes something to happen. Like, how long it takes the Bot-Mobile to go around the track once. They’re reciprocals.

  • In mathematics, reciprocals are two expressions that when multiplied together equal one. Like 2/3, and 3/2. They’re the flip of each other.

TERMINOLOGY (Just a Sampling)

  • Crest, Trough, Wave Height, Wavelength, Amplitude, The Who...

  • Frequency, Period, Compression, Rarefaction, Hertz, Bascom Scale...

  • Equilibrium, Reciprocal, Denominator, First Harmonic, Mort de Rire...

  • Pulse, Earthquakes, P-Waves, Shear Waves, Surface Waves...

  • Double-Overheader, Ankle Biter, Budgie Smugglers, Borboryzein...

  • NASCAR, Bristol Motor Speedway, “The Wave”, Seismologist...

RESEARCH (See KB-23’s Wonder Time for more)

  • Earthquakes create longitudinal, transverse and surface waves. Do some research and find some interesting facts about earthquakes--whatever you find interesting. Ever felt one? What was it like?

  • What’s a standing wave? What’s the difference between different harmonics and their shapes? Research them in terms of music. Just go down the rabbit hole and learn something new.

  • What is the history of the crowd wave? Who invented it?

  • What do you know about pinball? Learn some pinball history and vocabulary.

S1:E4 ANATOMY CONTENTS BY SECTION

COMIC INTRO

See L.E., and K-2L5 sweatin’ to the oldies in the holo dungeon when all of the sudden L.E.’s hit by an epiphany about The Inchies and human waves.

KB-23’s WONDER TIME

Join the ranks of pinheads and become a wizard. Get a refresher course on the direction of wave particle movement and energy transfer. Make transverse and longitudinal human waves.

PROF E’s LEARNING TIME

Prof E gives the crew an anatomy lesson--wave anatomy that is. See KB-23 say, “Huh, I guess I have seen a wave’s anatomy. Eww.” Learn about earthquakes in France and what happens at cheese factories. Are surfing, NASCAR, frequency and period all related? Sing our song, “B-Rope Wizard.”

K-2L5’s PRACTICE TIME

Make slinky longitudinal waves. and learn about compression, rarefaction, and amplitude. Learn groundbreaking insights about earthquakes. Make transverse battle rope waves and learn about frequency and period.

MISS TONKS’ SHOW ME TIME

The bots take the Bot-Mobile to the North Wilkesboro Speedway to test its new suspension. K2 forgets her coil spanner, and waveform discriminator. Answer Miss Tonks’ wave anatomy questions about their trek. Don’t forget your flute, and Tardis alarm clock.

L.E.’s REFLECTION TIME

Take the oppor-tuna-ty to reflect on what you’ve learned, and create some questions for the class in the ship’s holo space.

GRANGER-2 BAND’s VOCAB TO LYRICS

Record definitions for all the new terminology you’ve learned. Create a “Weird Al” type song, or just try changing the lyrics to “B-Rope Wizard.”

ATMO’s ANSWERS

Help Atmo hide all of L.E.’s left hand weight gloves. Get some words of encouragement from Babe Ruth and Chuck Yeager about not giving up. At least that’s what Atmo heard Prof E say they said. Ruh-roh.

RAINBOW FIVE’s SNEAK PREVIEW

Try out Rainbow Five’s new puzzle and find out what KB-23 said after getting banned from a local gas station for playing her music too loud.

Two separate formats are included.

  • The "Spread" version shows what the lesson would look like if presented in comic book format, one two-page 11 x 17 spread at a time. It's great for displaying electronically, or for printing full two page spreads on 11 x 17 paper.

  • The "non-spread" version depicts each page on 8.5 x 11. It's great for printing back to back pages which will then allow the story to unfold like turning pages in a book.
