6th Grade Physical Science (S1: Waves E2: Battle Whip)
S1E2: BATTLE WHIP CONTENTS
MISSION OBJECTIVES
- At the end of this mission all bacon lovers will be able to define, identify and explain the key concepts of the term wave--non-bacon lovers too, but I’ve not seen evidence that they exist.
- Before swimming through the castle with Rainbow Five all llama wranglers will be able to explain the importance of interacting matter particles in the formation of waves.
BASIC THEORY
- A wave is a repeated, or periodic disturbance in some thing, not the thing being disturbed. It takes energy to disturb this thing.
- Whatever gets disturbed moves from its equilibrium position, and then back to its equilibrium, or rest position.
- The thing that gets disturbed is either made of matter, like a battle rope, a slinky, or L.E. KB-23 is really good at disturbing her. Or, it could be fields in space (which we haven’t learned yet).
- A wave transfers energy from one place to another. It may move matter around a little, but the matter returns to where it started. Only energy is transfered. However, if the matter’s hand holding particles don’t interact with each other then energy won’t transfer.
TERMINOLOGY (Just a Sampling)
- Wave, Medium, Periodic, Pulse, Matter, Rest Position or Equilibrium...
- Monty Python, Puffy Head Bird Legs, Claire Bloom, Rube Goldberg...
- Great Googa Mooga, Wunderbar, Heart of Darkness, Ferris Bueller...
- Longitudinal Wave, Ultraviolet Wave, Sun Screen, Microwave...
- Free Fall, Exactement, Beach Boys, Super Sonic, Gravity Well...
RESEARCH (See KB-23’s Wonder Time for more)
- L.E. uses her battle rope like a battle whip to silence the fire alarm. When she does that it makes a loud “Super Sonic Smack-A-Lacka.” Why?
- L.E. says before she can meet in the classroom she has to recover from “Puffy Head Bird Legs.” Is that a real thing? Explain.
- When applying sunscreen K-2L5 tells KB-23 that she missed a spot on her aft motivator. What does sunscreen do, and why does it prevent a burn?
- KB-23 mentioned that free-fall makes her hungry. What is free-fall? Is the Earth in free-fall? Explain.
- How does a microwave oven use microwaves to heat up food--like my marshmallows?
S1:E2 BATTLE WHIP CONTENTS BY SECTION
COMIC INTRO
See KB-23 burn her bacon, and set off the fire alarm; Miss Tonks activate fire suppresion, and L.E. turn her battle rope into a battle whip as she silences the alarm. Hear K-2L5 say, “Chick-a-Boom, Chick-a-Boom.” Huh?
KB-23’s WONDER TIME
Great Googa Mooga who is Lee Dorsey? Why does sunscreen work? How do microwave ovens heat food like marshmallows? Wonder with KB-23.
PROF E’s LEARNING TIME
See Prof E break down his wave definition. Watch KB-23 do the robot. Choose your favorite character and take part in a skit about hand holding matter particles transferring energy. Sing our song, “Wave Formations.”
K-2L5’s PRACTICE TIME
Practice making mechanical transverse battle rope waves. Are the battle rope and the wave the same thing? Find out. Then make a Rube Goldberg machine that uses a wave to transfer energy.
MISS TONKS’ SHOW ME TIME
Why are softballs called “soft” balls? Interesting, but not relevant, unless you want to discuss the double slit experiment. We’ll save that for later. Anywho, show Miss Tonks what you’ve learned about waves. You got this!
L.E.’s REFLECTION TIME
Relax. You’ve earned it. Join L.E. for some quite reflection time in the ship’s holo space. This is your chance to tell us what you’ve learned, and what you still have questions about.
GRANGER-2 BAND’s VOCAB TO LYRICS
Record definitions for all the new terminology you’ve learned. Create a “Weird Al” type song, or lyric to help you remember wave concepts.
ATMO’s ANSWERS
Play tug-of-war with Atmo. Get a dog’s perspective on the day’s events. Snuggle up and review answers to Miss Tonks’ Show Me Time questions.
RAINBOW FIVE’s SNEAK PREVIEW
Watch “I Love Lucy” re-runs with Rainbow Five. Catch a glipse of what’s coming next. Go blind trying out some of her bonus material.
